Graffiti Awareness #FGM

This art was about FGM, Female Genital Mutilation. I was just as surprised as little Alice, that such things even happened in the UK!

FGM is basically female circumcision without the consent. It intentionally alters or causes injury to the females private area for non-medical reasons. It’s also illegal in the UK. I do not understand how anyone can do this to another person!?

Apparently over 20,000 girls under the age of 15 are at risk!! How disgusting is that! There are 66000 women living with the consequences of FGM but the true extent is still unknown… so there are hundreds and thousands more women who are suffering from FGM.

The procedures are carried out traditionally with NO MEDICAL TRAINING. No anaesthetics or antiseptic treatments are used and FGM is carried out using knives, scissors, scalpels, pieces of glass or razor blades. Would you trust a blind man to do surgery on you? This is what these girls are facing.

There are literally no benefits to FGM, only a series of immediate and long-term consequences. These include, wounds infections, heavy bleeding, difficulty peeing, damage to the reproductive system, psychological damage and many more.

This is an issue that is not at all acceptable. Young girls shouldn’t have to face this trauma and no one deserves this. We need to raise awareness and our voices on this matter. Even if it means tweeting about it or writing a blog post or a facebook post, simply letting people know can make the biggest difference in someone’s life.

You can read more about it here:

We should and need to be a part of stopping these!
